For contractors who run several sites with one workforce. CDM 2015 makes supervision and competence a legal duty (Regulation 15), and says not to accept a job without the capability to do it (Regulation 8). Both depend on knowing who is where, every day.

A. Seven checks before Monday

Regulation 15 requires each worker to have appropriate supervision, and the skills, knowledge, training and experience for the tasks given to them, or to be in the process of obtaining them.

  1. Every live site has cover on every working day next week.

  2. Nobody is booked on two sites on the same day.

  3. Every site has its supervisor named for each day, not just for the week.

  4. The people going to each site hold the cards and training its work needs, and none of them has lapsed.

  5. Holidays, training days and sickness are on the plan, not in somebody's head.

  6. Night shifts have rest built in before anybody goes back on days.

  7. Everybody knows where they are going, in writing, before they set off.

B. Before you take on a new job

Regulation 8 requires the organisational capability to do the job, and says not to accept an appointment without it.

  1. Who will run it, and what are they doing now?

  2. Which site loses them, and who covers that site?

  3. Does the team named in the tender match the team on the plan?

  4. Which bank holidays and shutdowns fall inside the programme?

C. Signs the plan has stopped telling the truth

  1. People ring the office to ask where they are tomorrow.

  2. Only one person can read the plan, and nobody can when they are away.

  3. You find a gap or a double booking on the morning it happens.
